Self-Care for Neurodivergent Adults

Writer: Emily DugganEmily Duggan

For neurodivergent adults, prioritizing self-care can feel overwhelming, especially when managing sensory sensitivities, executive dysfunction, or societal pressures. However, self-care is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being.

Start by identifying what works best for you. Traditional self-care advice may not always align with your needs, so it’s okay to get creative. If meditation feels challenging, consider engaging in repetitive activities like knitting or listening to calming music. If physical exercise is overstimulating, try low-impact alternatives like stretching or walking in nature.

Establishing routines can also help. Use tools like reminders, apps, or visual schedules to keep track of tasks and build structure into your day. Remember to set boundaries to protect your energy and allow yourself the grace to rest when needed.

At Sunlight Psychotherapy, we understand that neurodivergence comes with unique self-care challenges. Our therapists can work with you to develop personalized strategies that honor your neurodivergent identity and support your overall well-being. Let’s make self-care work for you.
